Our story

Hi, I'm Sonya.
Big Momma.

I picked up the nickname “Big Momma” when I was pregnant with my first child, and it stuck. I love quilting. I love fabric. Every quilter and seamstress knows how hard it is to walk past a gorgeous piece of fabric without bringing it home — so I usually don't even try. Take a look through the gallery to see my handiwork; I mostly piece and quilt on the machine, but I've done plenty by hand too — cross stitch, needlepoint, and some quilt hand piecing.

T-shirt quilts are a charming keepsake at any age. I love collecting and arranging t-shirts and fabric, and I love a versatile quilt — so I'll often mix in extra fabrics or pieced squares to liven things up. I can make t-shirt quilts in a clean grid of squares or the varied, improvisational style I just described. Your vision comes first, but if you give me room to create, I promise you a beautiful finished piece.

Most t-shirt quilts get loved on a couch, not hung on a wall, so I machine quilt every shirt, sash, and surrounding fabric on my TinLizzie 16 long-arm — her name is Elizabeth.

I've been sewing for over 30 years. I started with clothing and moved on to quilts about 20 years ago. Along the way I've made prom dresses, men's suits, wool coats, bridesmaid dresses, and just about every kind of daily-wear clothing, plus pillow covers and window treatments around the house. But quilting? Quilting is the love.
